Colectivo Arte Capula
THE LIFE OF THE CAPULINEADO AND VIBRANCY OF MICHOACAN'S HERITAGE

From the clay-rich lands of Capula, Michoacán, Colectivo Arte Capula carries forward a pottery tradition rooted deeply in the region’s cultural history. In this small town just outside Morelia, ceramics have been shaped, fired, and painted for generations—each piece reflecting a blend of Indigenous knowledge and Spanish techniques that gave rise to Capula’s distinctive pottery tradition.
Working with locally sourced clay, the artisans of the collective mold and fire each vessel before bringing it to life with capulineado, a meticulous dotted painting technique unique to Capula. Tiny hand-painted points gather into vibrant flowers, flowing patterns, and lively motifs, creating the illusion of movement across the surface of cups, bowls, and serving pieces.
Each object is carefully glazed and fired again, transforming humble earth into colorful tableware meant to be held, shared, and used in everyday rituals—from morning coffee to family meals. No two pieces are ever exactly the same; every dot is placed by hand, making each work a small testament to patience, skill, and tradition.
Through their craft, Colectivo Arte Capula preserves one of Michoacán’s most recognizable ceramic traditions, ensuring that the vibrant language of clay, color, and community continues to flourish from workshop to table.
