BOLD SILHOUETTES AND FRESH EYES TO AN ANCIENT CRAFT OF BARRO NEGRO

Specialization: Barro Negro

Colectivo Lissandy is a family-run ceramic collective devoted to the magnetic and ancestral beauty of barro negro, the sacred black clay of Oaxaca. The collective was founded over 20 years ago by Eva Cruz, and José Armando Pérez, and created by generations of inherited wisdom, shaping patience, devotion, and memory.

Today, their daughters, Estrella Lisset Pérez Cruz and Andrea Concepción Pérez, proudly represent Colectivo Lissandy as the fourth generation of artisans, carrying forward a legacy deeply rooted in love, tradition, and cultural pride. Encouraged from childhood to honor their lineage, they continue the path of barro negro with gratitude and purpose.

Colectivo Lissandy is located in San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, a town renowned worldwide for its “clay of faith” and “clay of love.” Using locally sourced clay, every form is carefully hand-molded and refined with textured details that celebrate the natural spirit of the earth. The pieces are fired underground through an oxygen-free technique, allowing the clay to transform into its signature deep black tone with rich, luminous, and full of mystery.

With deep respect for their ancestors, both sisters preserve traditional methods while embracing innovation. Guided by youthful creativity, they explore new shapes, bold silhouettes, and modern interpretations, bringing fresh eyes to an ancient craft and ensuring barro negro continues to evolve as a living art.
