Colectivo Entrelazos

INTERWEAVING AND PRESERVING OAXACA ANCIENT TEXTILE WORK

Specialization: Backstrap Loom

Colectivo Entrelazos is a Mixe (Ayuuk) community from San Juan Cotzocón, in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca. They are distinguished for their work on the telar de cintura, or backstrap loom, a legacy that stands as a testament to their ancestry.

Created by the Toribio Díaz family, Colectivo Entrelazos was initiated by their matriarch at the age of twenty. Learning everything from their mother, these ancestral transmissions of technique have shaped their captivating textile work. They create innovative and textural combinations rooted in ancient brocade characteristics, featuring motifs of flora and fauna that reflect their community. The matriarch remains an essential symbol within their work, as she is the reason many of their ancient rituals continue to be kept alive.

For over 40 years, they have had the privilege and satisfaction of dedicating themselves to this art, making it their mission to preserve the ancient and traditional process of the backstrap loom. Offering the highest quality, their process is a masterpiece in itself. From huipils and blouses to pillowcases, table runners, and more, their artistic practice is a meaningful celebration of their culture and a powerful preservation of ancestral knowledge.
