Colectivo Duranton
MYTHICAL ANCESTRAL VISIONS AND OTHERWORLY WONDERS

In Mexico City, the birthplace of alebrijes, Colectivo Duranton is a vibrant, family-run cartonería workshop where paper, cardboard, and paste have been transformed into living art for more than 80 years. Rooted in a beloved Mexican tradition, their work brings figures to life through rich textures, radiant color, and storytelling that celebrates folklore and imagination.
The workshop is led by Erick Duranton, nephew of Pedro Linares, the legendary creator of alebrijes. Linares first dreamed these fantastical creatures into being, shaping one of Mexico’s most iconic folk art forms. Erick carries his uncle’s vision forward, crafting beings with vivid hues, wild eyes, claws, teeth, and magical narratives—keeping ancestral creativity alive in every piece. What began as a playful experiment grew into a calling, as Erick recognized his gift and devoted himself fully to papier-mâché.
Working alongside his mother and brother, each family member contributes to every stage of the process—molding, assembling, and painting with paper, paste, and pigment. Together, they create otherworldly figures filled with joy, tradition, and cultural pride. Whether honoring Día de Muertos or brightening celebrations year-round, each piece carries the enduring spirit of cartonería and sparks wonder wherever it goes.
