Colectivo Herencia Ancestral
ANCESTRAL PRACTICES AND THE RESILIENCE OF ZAPOTEC HERITAGE

From the weaving town of Santo Tomás Jalieza, in the heart of Oaxaca, Colectivo Herencia Ancestral carries forward the living tradition of the telar de cintura — the ancestral backstrap loom that has been passed down through generations.
In Jalieza, weaving is more than craft — it is daily life, memory, and identity. Using pre-Hispanic techniques, each artisan anchors the loom to her body and a fixed point, becoming one with the rhythm of the threads. With patience and precision, cotton fibers are transformed into richly patterned textiles that honor Zapotec heritage and storytelling.
Table runners, bolsas, pillow covers, and everyday essentials come to life slowly and intentionally — each piece woven with warmth, resilience, and deep respect for ancestral practice. Every design reflects the creativity of the weaver and the cultural language of her community.
Colectivo Herencia Ancestral reminds us that tradition is not something left in the past — it is something we live with, cherish, and lovingly pass on, thread by thread.
