ANCIENT SYMBOLS AND SPIRITUAL REALMS OF WIXÁRA BEADWORK

Specialization: Chaquira Jewelry

In the heart of the Sierra Madre Occidental, Colectivo Maxa Kwaxi, a family of Wixárika artisans—more widely known as Huichol people—create vibrant chaquira art and jewelry. Founded by Angélica Ocasío and her family, the collective bridges generations, preserving ancestral knowledge while sharing its beauty with the world.

At just three years old, Angélica began designing her own cross-stitch embroideries, igniting a passion that connected her to her ancestors and lineage. Inspired by the natural world, her designs reflect the animals and landscapes surrounding her and express the sacred worldview of her people. Many pieces feature symbols such as the Ojo de Dios (Eye of God), an ancient emblem of divine protection. Using waxed threads to secure tiny chaquira beads, each work is slowly woven into intricate, colorful patterns—a process requiring patience, skill, and deep knowledge of traditional techniques.

For Colectivo Maxa Kwaxi, this craft is not only art—it is a sacred practice. Respecting the land and their cultural rituals, the family uses their creations as a form of resistance against appropriation, a conduit to communicate with the spiritual realm, tell their stories, and preserve the heritage of the Wixárika people for generations to come.
