A Collective of Artisans Preserving Traditions in San Juan Guichicovi

Nestled in the heart of San Juan Guichicovi, Oaxaca, a collective of 46 artisans, led by the matriarchal figure of Doña Osmayra, is dedicated to preserving and honoring the rich textile traditions passed down through generations. Founded in May 2020 in response to the pandemic's impact on their local market, the collective has become a beacon of cultural heritage and innovation.
The collective's expertise lies in the intricate technique of "cadenilla" embroidery, a painstaking process that transforms prefabricated cloth into exquisite garments. Each artisan meticulously traces designs onto the fabric, ensuring that the intricate patterns come to life with vibrant colors and impeccable detail. The rhythmic dance of their feet on the pedals of the cadeneta machines creates a symphony of industry, as they transform threads into wearable masterpieces.
Their creations range from the iconic "huipil de rejita," a staple of their community, to more elaborate pieces that showcase their artistic ingenuity. Each garment is a testament to their dedication and passion, bearing the weight of history and the promise of a vibrant future.
