WEAVING WILD PALM INTO ELEGANT CREATIONS AND WONDERS

In the heart of Tlamacazapa, breathes Colectivo Tlama, a proud Nahua community, carrying forward a craft rooted in land, memory, and devotion. Colectivo Tlama begin their days as early as five in the morning, when the air is still cool and the mountain light is soft. With precision and patience, they cut wild palm leaves — a delicate step that requires exact knowledge of where and how to slice so the palm remains workable. They honor two distinct varieties: sazona and costilla, each offering its own texture, strength, and spirit.
Once harvested, the palm is soaked in water to soften its fibers, then laid under the sun for days — turned carefully on each side until it transforms into a pale, almost white canvas. From there, the fibers are dyed using coffee, jamaica flowers, and earth-born pigments, creating tones that feel grounded, warm, and alive.
Preserving their generational and ancestral techniques, Colectivo Tlama weaves rugs, flowers, placemats, coasters, baskets, decorative wreaths, and more — each piece carrying the rhythm of early mornings and the wisdom of those who came before.
