Colectivo Xpokok
WEAVING A LANGUAGE OF MEMORY, CULTURE AND IDENTITY

In the highlands of San Andrés Larráinzar, Chiapas, Colectivo Xpokok is a group of women artisans led by Juana Díaz López. Together, they preserve one of the most ancient textile traditions of the Maya world: weaving on the backstrap loom (telar de cintura).
This women-led collective creates huipiles, textiles, and everyday accessories using cotton threads woven entirely by hand. Their pieces are known for intricate brocade designs, where patterns are woven directly into the cloth to form symbolic figures that reflect the land, nature, and the spiritual worldview of the Tzotzil community.
Each textile begins with carefully prepared threads and a loom tied between a fixed post and the weaver’s waist. Using her body to control the tension, the artisan weaves row by row, patiently forming designs that carry generations of knowledge and meaning.
Beyond creating textiles, Juana Díaz López and Colectivo Xpokok are dedicated to sharing their craft. Through workshops and community teaching, they pass down the knowledge of the backstrap loom to other women, helping preserve this ancestral practice while creating opportunities for the next generation of weavers.
