For more than 15 years, Colectivo Aguaschamucos has dedicated their lives to the vibrant tradition of Mexican cartonería, transforming paper, paste, and color into expressive works rooted in culture, identity, and imagination.

The family workshop is led by two collaborators who learned their appreciation for arte popular mexicano from their mother. Her teachings, along with the influence of other artisans, teachers, and masters of popular art, inspired them to make cartonería a full-time practice and a way of life.

Working together, they divide every stage of the process equally. Each piece begins with molds they create themselves, layering paper and paste to build the form. Once dried, the pieces are carefully painted with acrylics and vibrant colors. Depending on its complexity, each creation can take anywhere from three days to a week to complete.

For Colectivo Aguaschamucos, every piece is an expression of their culture, identity, environment, and connection to Mexico. Their colorful work reflects the beauty and history of Mexican popular art while helping keep the tradition alive.

By continuing to create, teach, and transmit this knowledge, they honor the generations of artisans who came before them and ensure that cartonería remains a living tradition, carried forward through every piece they make.
