THE SPECIAL LANGUAGE OF BARRO AND ARTISTRY OF PATAMBAN

Specialization: White Geometric Designs

In Patamban, Michoacán, Taller Contreras is a family workshop dedicated to artisanal ceramics. The Contreras family began their journey in ceramics through their mother, who started working with barro at a very early age. She first taught her son, Vicente Contreras, her specialty in traditional cántaros, or water jugs, known for their simple designs and styles. As Vicente mastered this craft, he became eager to develop more elaborate skills and began taking workshops from other local artisans and from nearby pueblos. By learning the barro bruñido technique and hand-painting designs, Vicente established and expanded the family workshop.

With deeply rooted traditional characteristics and signature white geometric designs, these ceramics are known for their intricate and complex hand-painted details. They are made with charanda, a Purépecha word for red clay. Today, four people work in the workshop, including Mother Contreras, Vicente’s sister, and his nephew. They all work together in their home, sharing the same space and time—while one paints, another works with barro bruñido, and another fires the kiln. They believe that working together is their herencia, their legacy, and a continuation of sharing, caring for, and honoring one another’s work.

Vicente finds great joy in pottery, describing it as a beautiful feeling to create something that travels, reaches faraway places, and connects with others he can learn from. Taller Contreras believes artistic practice is most joyful when shared with the community—exchanging knowledge and learning how each community brings its own unique touch. In this way, they unite people through the special language of barro, reflecting the artistry that has defined Patamban ceramics for generations.
