Taller de Emerenciana
EMBRACING EXCEPTIONAL TREASURES AND CELEBRATING ANCESTRY

In the serene Zapotec town of San Marcos Tlapazola, nestled among its beautiful landscapes, stands the wondrous Taller de Emerencia. The workshop is run by Emerencia Aquino Martínez, who began helping her mother at an early age with barro rojo, first completing basic tasks and later developing her skill and love for the craft.
She believes barro rojo is an important labor tradition—an ancestral practice she witnessed her grandparents and parents carrying on for generations. Her connection to barro rojo goes beyond daily work, as she feels she has learned from those who came before her, including those who have passed away and those who are still alive.
Emerencia is a proud artisan woman, creating remarkable pieces and bringing to life the imprint of age-old techniques. With great satisfaction in making her own artistic creations, she also helps other women learn how to make ceramics. By establishing an organization called Mujeres Aprendedoras, she teaches others how to shape, mold, and make a living through their craft. From mesmerizing sculptures to practical cookware, each piece carries warm, earthy tones and embodies exceptional artistry—celebrating the unique beauty and remarkable traditions of barro rojo.
