CATRINAS: THE CELEBRATIONS OF MEMORY AND ARTISTRY FROM CAPULA

In the heart of Capula, Michoacán, where the art of the Catrina had been cultivated for generations, Taller Reyes continues a tradition that became an iconic symbol in Mexican culture. This small town, known for its rich pottery heritage, is famous for transforming clay into elegant skeletal figures inspired by the legendary character first popularized by the artist José Guadalupe Posada.
At Taller Reyes, each Catrina is shaped, sculpted, and painted by hand in a family-run workshop where knowledge is passed down from one generation to the next. From the first molding of clay to the final delicate brushstrokes, every figure reflects patience, creativity and a deep cultural imagination.
With their elegance, these sculptural wonders feature graceful silhouettes, expressive faces, and richly decorated dresses.
The Reyes believe Catrinas are a way to capture the playfulness that defines the spirit of Dia de Muertos. Honoring the legacy of Capula’s artisans— bringing to life sculptures that celebrate memory, artistry, and the joyful Mexican relationship with life and death. Each Catrina becomes more than a figure; it becomes a piece of living heritage, crafted to be admired for generations.
