THE VOICE OF METEPEC’S BARRO PIGMENTADO AND LIVING HERITAGE

Specialization: Barro Pigmentado

Taller Vázquez is a family‑run ceramic workshop rooted in the celebrated tradition of barro pigmentado in Metepec, Estado de México. For generations, the Vázquez family has lived with the scent of fired earth and the rhythm of hands shaping clay by firelight, preserving techniques passed down through at least five generations of potters.

From a young age, Michelle Atzin Vázquez Rodríguez grew up among kilns and natural mineral pigments, learning to work with earth in the same space where her ancestors once labored. This early exposure instilled in her not just skill, but a deep respect for the craft where preparation of clay, blending of pigments, hand‑shaping, and careful kiln firing are all part of a mindful, weather‑dependent ancestral process.

Barro pigmentado, the technique the workshop has devoted itself to, is an artisan tradition that uses natural mineral‑based pigments to color clay without commercial paints, honoring the heritage of Metepec pottery while celebrating its expressive possibilities. From Trees of Life to suns, moons, mermaids and other figurative forms, each piece is shaped by hand with patience and reverence.

What began as a humble family atelier has grown outward as Michelle and her family have worked to share their craft beyond the workshop walls. Through digital storytelling and community engagement, they continue to bring the voice of Metepec’s ceramic tradition to wider audiences ensuring that each vessel, sculpture, and form carries with it the heritage of family hands, ancestral knowledge, and the living legacy of Mexican clay art.
