Colectivo Carro
ECO-FRIENDLY ARTISTIC WONDERS AND LOVE FOR THE NATURAL WORLD

Colectivo Carro is the heart of Pinotepa de Don Luis, Oaxaca, creating authentic artisanal crafts using eco-friendly materials. Founded and run by Luis Carro, the workshop specializes in working with jícara, or gourds from the calabash tree, to create hand-carved ornaments and artistic pieces filled with intricate detail. Colectivo Carro’s work reflects the rich cultural and ancestral traditions of Oaxaca.
The creation of jícara pieces requires precision, patience, and profound knowledge of natural materials, the landscape, and the calabash tree, as this tradition is preserved with great care and dedication. The process begins by collecting the jícaras once they are ripe and hardened. They are then perforated at the top, the pulp is removed, and the interior is cleaned of all residue. Finally, the pieces are sanded and carved to achieve their delicate images and details, and are finished with a protective clear coating. Truly, the process itself is an art form.
From stunning ornaments to mezcaleros used in Mexico’s gastronomy and local culture, each piece depicts natural imagery—often representing the flora, fauna, birds, rabbits, and other animals that inhabit the region. Luis Carro is deeply dedicated to tradition and craftsmanship, with a strong attention to detail. These artful gourds carry history, customs, and the vibrant spirit of Oaxaca, Mexico.
