Colectivo Lazaro
THE MAGIC OF WITNESSING LIFE AND INTIMATE ENCOUNTERS OF BEAUTY

In the abundant lands of Xalitla, in northern Guerrero, Mexico, Colectivo Lázaro has been bringing Papel Amate and clay to life for over thirty years. Their mother, Reyna Lázaro, learned the art of painting Papel Amate by watching her own parents, absorbing their care, love, and attention for this ancient craft. Papel Amate, a sacred paper used by the Mayans, Aztecs (Mexicas), Otomí, and other Indigenous communities, carries stories, rituals, and tradition in every fiber.
Curiosity led Reyna to barro, teaching her children the importance of storytelling through clay and paint. The family’s work is woven into their daily life—rituals, histories, ceremonies—and every detail is reflected in their creations. Together, they decide on designs and colors, capturing vibrant florals, landscapes, and nature motifs, each carrying deep cultural significance. Whether in bold color or black-and-white, every piece tells a story, preserving moments of weddings, baptisms, agricultural life, and ancestral devotion.
The art of Colectivo Lázaro is more than visual beauty—it is layered with feeling, energy, and spirit. Each piece holds the wonder of generations, a living connection to Indigenous traditions, and a magic that transcends borders. Through their ceramics and Papel Amate, the Lázaro family keeps history alive, crafting a luminous bridge between the past and present, and sharing the intimate heartbeat of their culture with the world.
