TRANSFORMING ANCESTRAL TECHNIQUES INTO VIBRANT MEMORIES AND PRIDE

From Chilapa de Álvarez, Guerrero, artisan Guisela Aguilar Aguilar carries the strength and beauty of her Nahua descent through every thread she creates. For many years, she has dedicated her life to preserving the textile traditions of her region—transforming ancestral techniques into vibrant works of art full of memory, and pride.
Working with deep-colored fabrics and natural cotton, Guisela weaves using the traditional telar de pedal, a meticulous process where warp and weft are crossed again and again to form strong, elegant textiles. Once the fabric is complete, the artistry continues: each motif is hand-drawn directly onto the cloth, then embroidered section by section using a small hoop, allowing every detail to bloom with precision and care.
Her embroidered designs are inspired by the flora of Guerrero, capturing the spirit of the land in bold floral forms and delicate movement. She also creates garments and textiles woven on waist strap looms, embellished with traditional stitches like chevron stitch and solid stitching, techniques passed down through generations.
Each piece can take over a week of dedicated work, making her creations not only beautiful, but deeply meaningful—true expressions of Nahua heritage, handmade patience, and the living artistry of Guerrero.
