In Náhuatl, Xalisco means “over the sandy surface.” Jalisco is one of Mexico’s most celebrated homelands — the birthplace of Mariachi, Ranchera, and the iconic agave spirit Tequila. The region is also home to Indigenous communities such as the Wixárika and Nahua, whose traditions continue to shape its rich artisan culture. Across Jalisco, crafts range from handwoven huaraches and clay ceramics to colorful papier-mâché figures. Among the most distinctive is Wixárika beadwork — intricate mosaics of tiny glass beads arranged into sacred patterns that reflect a deep spiritual connection to nature and the cosmos.
